Rangituhi-Colonial Knob

Rangituhi-Colonial Knob is becoming an outstanding location for mountain biking and other forms of recreation.

It just needs more slingletrack trails to do justice to its potential.  Read about existing mountain bike trails here.

The big hill offers any gradient you’d want, diverse forms of vegetation – native and exotic forest and grasslands - huge panoramas of Cook Strait and Porirua Harbour, space to spare and elevation – 468m of it. Something for everyone.

And all within a short bike ride of downtown Porirua and Tawa.

More trails will open up Rangituhi-Colonial Knob to those seeking relaxation, fun or thrills.

That’s where the Mana Cycle Group comes in. In partnership with Porirua City Council, the Department of Conservation and Ngati Toa we are building mountain bike and dual-use trails on the big hill.

We want you enjoy what it has to offer, but as a volunteer group we appreciate any support you can give to help us complete our vision for a first-class recreation facility for young and old, the fit and not-so fit, the highly skilled and those starting out.

Rangituhi, means sky glow, and offers views of Cook Strait and on clear days the Kaikoura Range to the south, Waikanae to the north and Mt Taranaki in the north-west.

The hill is mainly covered by regenerating native forest (most of the original rimu and rata has been logged) and grasslands.

Te Ara a Rangituhi or Rangituhi Trail Park will include trails in four separately designated parks and reserves through the Elsdon, Colonial Knob and Spicer area:

  • Porirua Scenic Reserve
  • Colonial Knob Scenic Reserve
  • Te Rahui o Rangituhi (formerly Colonial Knob Parkland)
  • Spicer Botanical Park
