Kēmu O Rua Haurua, meaning "Game of Two Halves", is a Grade 3 flow trail featuring two distinct sections.
The upper half of the trail was built by our volunteers, led by Rob Hughes. This twisty, flowing section weaves through the trees, gradually building speed as riders traverse the hillside.
The lower half was machine-built (hence the trail's name) with funding from Trails Wellington and Meridian Energy Power Up community fund. Designed by Bryn Dickerson - Trail Designer for Trails Wellington at the time , this section is fast and flowing, with berms and features that keep the adrenaline high and leave riders eager for another lap.
The concept for the trail originated from a Wellington City Council (WCC) request for a loop track in the area following its acquisition of the land from private ownership. WCC was responsible for constructing the shared-use track (UP), while MCG was tasked with building a Grade 3 mountain bike trail (DOWN) to keep descending riders off the shared track. The Concept design for the Trail was undertaken by The Kennet Brothers.
Construction took place between on both Sections between July 2021 and July 2022, with the trail officially opening on 24 July 2022. Trail Digs were held almost every weekend, weather permitting, and attracted strong volunteer support throughout the project. More than 2,000 volunteer hours were contributed, Good numbers of volunteers attended each week, contributing their time and effort to help complete the trail.
